These tips from ServiceMaster Restoration and Cleaning by Skip will help you avoid the need for fire restoration in Dekalb, IL this summer
The summer season is all about grilling. Well, it’s also about warm weather, vacations, golf, baseball, swimming pools, and fresh fruit and vegetables, but grilling is definitely somewhere in there.
By and large, grilling is a safe way to prepare food outdoors, provided you don’t use gasoline and liquid oxygen to light the coals. However, there are some tips you can keep in mind to help further reduce the risk of fire damage and smoke damage to your home. As wonderful as grilling can be, fire damage restoration cleaning services resulting from “grilling gone wrong” can really put a damper on this time-honored outdoor activity.
If, for example, you use a gas grill, you should regularly check the gas hose to ensure there are no visible holes or fraying. A stray spark or drip of flaming grease can turn a gas grill into a miniature flame thrower if the hose is damaged, and that can quickly lead to a fire damage event.
For charcoal grills, remember to keep an area of about three feet around it clear of all debris to prevent falling coals from starting a fire below. Charcoal grills should also never be used on wooden decks or patios, no matter how convenient that may seem. After all, fire damage restoration is rarely, if ever, convenient.
All grills should never be used in close proximity to house walls and should instead be used a safe distance away. Even if a fire doesn’t catch hold, a particularly smoky fire can blow smoke through open windows and actually cause smoke damage. On that same note, never use a grill indoors, which may sound like common sense, but a surprising number of people do exactly that each year.
Before using a grill, be sure to scrape away any existing grease or residue from previous uses. That grease can become quite flammable at high temperatures, which can contribute to fire damage, but it can also cause your food to cook abnormally fast, and then you’re stuck with a burnt wall, smoke damage, AND charred food.
